The International Lung Pan Pacific Cancer Conference, inaugurated in 2002, is a biannual event designed to enhance collaboration among leading lung cancer researchers and clinicians from North America, Europe and Asia. The conference has now won endorsements from the key international lung cancer organizations.
China Lung Cancer Summit
Last September, three of our scientists, Zhidong Xu, PhD, Liang You, PhD and David Jablons, MD were invited to attend the 2nd North South Lung Cancer Summit in Beijing, China. There Dr. Jablons presented a major talk on lung cancer before an audience of prominent health ministers and leading Chinese physicians at the Great Hall of the People, equivalent to the U.S. Capitol.
According to Dr. Xu, Dr. Jablons' talk awakened China to the realization that lung cancer is a mushrooming problem that can no longer be ignored. The Summit was followed by the drafting of The Beijing Declaration On Lung Cancer, which was subsequently submitted to the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Jablons was also appointed Special Consultant for Lung Cancer to the Beijing Lung Cancer Center, cementing a relationship of international collaboration that will improve translational and clinical research for decades to come.
International Research Collaboration with Rafael Rosell, MD
The Thoracic Oncology Program established an important collaborative relationship with Dr. Rafael Rosell of the Institut Catala D'Oncologia in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Rosell is one of the world's leading medical oncologists. Our respective programs have established The Carbajal Fellowship to facilitate the regular exchange of researchers. Dr. Noemi Reguart, a protégé of Dr. Rosell was the first recipient, facilitating her research during 2004 in the Jablons lab.
In 2005, Dr. Reguart coauthored six articles with others in of our lab. At the 11th World Conference on Lung Cancer last July in Barcelona, Dr. Rosell's team commiserated with our physicians and researchers at the symposium, all of whom played a formal role either as a speaker, presenter, session moderator, or abstract poster.
